The Grand Canyon Caverns is outside of the Grand Canyon National Park on Old Historic Route # 66 near Peach Springs, Arizona. There are a hotel, restaurant, store, a gift shop and a runway, and places for the kids to play (August 2001) and there is an elevator that goes down 21 stories (210 feet) underground to the cave. The cave was used as an emergency shelter during the 1963 Cuban Missile Crisis and had been stocked with tons of food for two-thousand people for several weeks, the unfortunate part was it was never really used, but that was fortunate as only three (3) rolls of toilet paper were provided at the time.
The caverns tour is about 45 minutes, and there is a 25 minute wheelchair tour, but the actually caverns have never been fully explored as they reach far distant to the walls of the Grand Canyon. These are 'Dry' caverns, and rare in there is very low moisture and miles and miles of passages.
Like all caves the interior temperature is about 57 degrees Fahrenheit, thus even thought the Arizona outside temperature is 100 + in August you will need a light sweater or jacket. And if you cannot climb stairs or are claustrophobic, then this may not be for you.
