Travel by Train

The primary passenger rail line in the United States of America is Amtrak and it does a reasonable job of transporting people from point A to B.  There are though some tips and items that you should be aware of as follows:

The Decision to travel by train

When traveling in the USA or another country you have to decide the means of travel that is best for you.  What is best for you may be the cost, the convenience, or the locations being traveled to or from.  You have to consider the cost of traveling by airplane, bus, car, RV, etc., with the associated costs of fuel, surcharges, food, housing, insurances, etc.

Many times, especially when traveling long distances , it makes more sense to take the train.  If you are a Senior Citizen or a Student  and you do not have to be limited to a specific time or location schedule, then taking the train may be very advantageous as you may save hundreds of dollars in transportation cost.

You also have to consider the wear and tear on yourself and you family if driving for long distances for days in an effort to arrive at your final destination.  It may be better to take the train to a location near the final destination and then rent a car or van or whatever for the actual adventure of sightseeing.

There are though limitations  in that you are restricted as to items you can take on the trip, and you are at the mercy of the transportation company, which can result in missed schedules, reservations, etc.

Automotive Transport

Some Amtrak routes, primarily from New York to Florida, offer the ability to drive your vehicle onto the train, and have it transported with you.  If you are traveling on the Auto Train you must check in at least two hours before scheduled departure.  Currently the Auto Train starts in Virginia and goes to Florida.
