Boredom
On long trips be sure to have activities planned to break up the boredom of
the ride. Games, movies, songs, jokes, food, and other similar items can make
for a fun trip that seems not to be as long as it actually is. Be sure that if
you are going to provide a movie or other entertainment that it is suitable for
the group and it can be done in full in the allotted time. To start a two-hour
movie on the return ride of a one-hour duration will only frustrate your guests.
Some people show travel log videos of the place one is going to, or comic videos
that can be ended or interrupted at any point.
Try to move people around; many times people travel with their personal mates or
friends and do not get to meet anyone else on the trip. Seating should be for
mates and friends, but when it comes to bus or meal seating, try to break up the
‘clicks’ and mix it up some. This may antagonize a few, but after a few minutes
of ‘new’ conversation most will enjoy the experience.
Emergency Procedures
A recent trip included a meal at a well-known and reputable eating
establishment; unfortunately several members of the tour came down with food
poisoning and one or two were bad enough to have to be hospitalized. This
happened hundreds of miles from the city of origin of the tour and the
restaurant had no transportation facilities to transport people to the hospital,
therefore ambulances had to be called. The group had no prior instructions on
what to do in the event of an emergency and therefore, each person did his or
her own thing, making the case against the restaurant difficult to prove and
win.
Our suggestion is to make sure that in the future that everyone has been
informed of procedures and that a single person be assigned to handle emergency
situations and becomes the contact person in the event of problems.
Everyone should be instructed on what to do and how to get back to his or her
home in the event that he or she is hospitalized in a distant location. Everyone
on the trip should carry an ‘Emergency Contact’ card in his or her
pocketbook or wallet.
Passports and Shots (Foreign travel)
Before leaving the departure area, be sure that each and every person on the
trip has his or her up-to-date passports and immunizations records. You do not
want to be stopped at the border for lack of records. In April of 2009
the passport rules changed, be sure to keep updated on the rules. Also, many
countries have changed their rules and the ten-year U.S.A. Passport many only be
welcome during the first three-years of its issue. Teens and
children and pets may also come under different rules. If in doubt, CHECK.
