Where to Joe - USA MISSIONS
Missions of the Southwest
Most of the missions were from the era when Mexico controlled the lands of the American Southwest, and when the Spanish were attempting to 'tame' the 'Indians', Native American Population; religion was the great equalizer in those days. The missions were usually located on well traveled paths about 24 miles apart, what a horse or wagon could travel in a day's time, and each provided a means of rest, food, and water for the weary traveler.
Today, many of the missions have been restored and are under the control of federal, or state, or local authorities and residents, and although most are open to the public at no charge, some may not be.
