Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Dead Horse Ranch State Park, a 423-acre park in nearby Cottonwood is very much alive, despite its foreboding name. The Verde River runs through the park, making it a popular site for camping, hiking, canoeing, picnicking, fishing and wading. More than 300 birds fly through the park each year—from predatory falcons and migrating species to the inquisitive cactus wren, the state bird of Arizona.

 Recommended drive:

From I-17 at exit 287 go northwest on Route 260 to route 279 at Bridgeport and Cottonwood.  Right on Alt 89 will take you to Sedona, straight on South Main Street will take you to Dead Horse Ranch State Park  where you can exit the park via Tuzigoot Road and proceed to the Tuzigoot National Monument.   Staying on Alt 89 west will take you to Jerome and the Jerome State Park.   From this point you backtrack to Alt 89 north and to Sedona and then to Oak Creek and eventually I-17 and Flagstaff.  This is a full days drive but well worth it.

A six-mile reach of the river is known as the Verde River Greenway State Natural Area.
