Speak Out - Tourist Welcome?

Tourist community or NOT?

On a recent vacation trip to Washington, D.C. with friends and family I drove and my son navigated with maps and a GPS device.  Getting to Washington, D.C. was not too much of a problem, getting around the city proved to be.

I have been to Washington, D.C. many times over the past six decades and for the most part really enjoyed the city in the earlier decades, this last trip, though, was a trip.  The traffic was tremendous, and the local drivers were very aggressive to the point of being bullies; they had no respect for us Senior Citizen tourist that were trying to visit their fine city and spend our hard-earned dollars visiting some of the nearly 400 memorials that make up the tourist trade in Washington, D.C., and presumably brings in billions of dollars in tourist revenue each year.

Not only did we experience hostile drivers, we are driving with out-of-state tags, but we also found that the government workers, including the police who were standing around on street corners were not only NOT helpful, but 'put out' by our asking directions to this or that building or monument.

We never got to see half of the places we wanted to see due to NO parking, lack of adequate parking, poor road signage, lack of historical markers, and lack of cooperation from the good citizens of Washington, D.C. Too top it off, we also got a $100 parking ticket for parking in a Metered parking spot on Independence Avenue a couple of minutes after the 'legal' metered spots turned to 'illegal' metered spots at the afternoon rush hour.  This was after the meters took our money for the full two hours that we visited the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, and returned to our vehicle within the two hour time period that for which we paid.

Needless to say, the lesson here is that if you want the tourist trade and the tourist money, then you need to 'educate' your local residents as to the importance of 'caring' for those visitors that spent the time, effort, and money to come to see what you have to offer.  To the fine citizens of Washington, D.C.,  I offer this, we will probably not be coming back your city and 'disturbing' your peace….
