Commercial Chamber of Commerce tourist locations - missing out on much?
Elsewhere on this website, I give a listing of the 'official' tourism bureaus {click to view} for the 50 states, and these listed websites are a very good starting point for locating places to visit within each state and the USA in general. With that said, you need to understand that these booklets are written by and for the 'commercial' interest of the people and companies that stand to benefit from your visit and money expenditures.
On this website {click to view} you will find much information and several books written by myself and others that are NOT connected with the 'official' tourism bureaus or the commercial interest groups, and the books do not for the most part advertize or show bias for any particular commercial endeavor. Therefore, we can show you places to visit that are not generally listed in the individual state booklets.
It is a shame, and somewhat of a sham, that so many of a state's natural resources, peoples, and smaller businesses are not displayed in the 'official' tourism booklets, but since these people do not have the money to pay for ads, or the clout to politically gain recognition, they tend to not be listed. The Native American community is one such group of people seldom mentioned in USA State 'official' touring booklets, even though these were the indigenous people of the USA and without the various tribes most early settlers would not have survived.
The history of the Black Slaves and People is another link missing in most 'official' touring booklets, along with the history and sites that featured many of our county's builders like the Chinese, Irish, Germans, etc.
The USA has tens of thousands of small interesting spots to visit from old historic graveyards and churches, to individual lakes and mountains, to hundreds of caves, gold and silver mines, ghost towns, hunting and fishing spots, water and snow sports, to just very delightful and fantastic towns, peoples, and memorials. On one short two week trip we found over 50 places of interest that were NOT in the State's 'official' tourism booklets, and you may find many of those spots shown in the pictures section {click to view} of this website.
How to find these spots? As stated try the 'official' touring booklets, and then try the Internet mapping sites like Rand McNally that provide a listing of interesting spots within a mile or two of the routes or towns or cities you are to visit. Order books that feature the area of concern; look at the maps of the area, do an Internet search for the comments of others that have been there or live there, and do a Wikipedia search of the location to be visited. You may find that your two day side trip to XYZ turns into a two week intensive and informative adventure of the XYZ area.
