Out of Proportion Maps

You can go on the Internet and view or download maps of just about any place in the world, and for the most part these are accurate, provide good point to point mileage and directions, but you will also find that many websites and brochures display their areas or a specific tourist location in 'relation' to another more known place.

What does this mean to you, well if you are driving from point A to point B you want to have a general idea of the number of miles and the time it will take, it is called 'Planning' a trip.  To have a map or drawing or representation that is 'not to scale' can be very misleading and can cause you to miss your timing and in some instances miss events or ticketed shows and rides. 

Another thing that one has to look for are the maps that are accurate, but do not provide the 'time' to allow to get from point A to point B.  Example, the road from ABC to XYZ may be 120 miles long and it is a fully paved four lane highway with no cities or other traffic blockages, thus the average time to drive the 120 miles would be about 2 hours.  The same map contains another road 120 miles in length, but it passes through a city like I-95 in Philadelphia.  The average time now extends to 2.5 hours due to the traffic, accidents, and other delays caused by the volume of traffic in the city.  Now take the next 120 mile long road that passes through the countryside and is narrow and winding, it takes 3 hours to make this trip.  Follow this by the 120 mile road that is very hilly, narrow, winding, has a tunnel or two, and is a tourist scenic route where people are slowing or stopping frequently to view this and that, now your time can approach 4 or 5 hours.

Many maps do not take the aforementioned road conditions into consideration, and therefore may be doing a disservice to the reader and traveler.  To be far, some of the major map makers do make attempts to 'guesstimate' the correct timing, and we commend these people for this.
