Speak Out - Lines, Lines, lines...

In American English

Lines, lines, lines…..?

We recently went to visit a National Park Cave in South Dakota and arrived at the location about 9:30 AM only to find that there was a three (3) hour waiting list to enter and be guided through the underground maze. It was pouring rain, and there was no cover near the line waiting area; there were though a small snack bar area and a very nice museum area. We chose to NOT wait for the cave decent due to other places we had scheduled to visit, we did get to see the museum.

This past week we were in Philadelphia and visited a 1800's Paddle-wheeler River boat; we had reservations and got there 15 minutes early only to find that there were a line of over 100 people with reservations waiting in the pouring rain. There was no cover, and everyone without an umbrella was getting soaked, the crew of the River Boat was asked if we could board early, the answer was "no".

Anyone going to an amusement park will soon discover that the lines to the rides are near impossible, and the twenty ride ticket cannot be used in an eight-hour day, as seven of the hours is spent waiting in lines.

Additionally, many places that are the entry points to a park or exhibit are not covered and are in direct, and mostly hot sunshine, which can lead to temporary health problems for many, and semi-permanent sunburn for most.

It is these types of insensitivity to the paying tourist that makes for bitterness and non-recommendations to others, and in fact generates 'Speak Out' articles like the one you are reading.

Thus, please publish in your Brochures and on your websites the average waiting times for lines to purchase tickets, wait for tour guide, and the wait for rides, etc. Also if there is cover in the event of bright burning sunlight, foul weather, or insect infestations. We are tourist and we will come prepared for all these, providing we know the condition exist.

If you can afford it, and most attractions can, then you should consider some sort of covering over the waiting area; taking into consideration the age of your clients, the wind, rain, snow, sun, and insect problems that may occur. Thanks..

 Raya, raya, lines?

Gracias. .
