Fishing and hunting laws - Florida has saltwater license laws?

In the United States of America we have 50 states, and therefore we have 50 different sets of laws for driving, hunting, carrying a firearm, and for fishing the state's waters.

If you plan to go fishing you must get a copy of the state's fishing license laws and if necessary a license. Many states have upper and lower age limits where no license is required, usually for those under the age of 12 or over the age of 65 or so. Many states will have licenses for specific breeds of fish, and not for other, and they many have daily limitations on the numbers of a specific fish or shell fish that can be taken. States that have trout or other gaming fish may have minimum or maximum size limitations, and within some states there may be 'catch and release' regulations for certain fish catches.

You will find that in some coastal states there are NO licensing needed to fish ocean or salt waters if done as a sports fisherman and with hook and line, netting or other commercial catching does require a license. You will also find some of the popular tourist states, Florida for one, that do charge for a saltwater fishing license, either on a daily, or seasonal, or yearly basis.

In 2010 the USA Federal Government enacted a Salt-water program to help the fishing industry, private and commercial, in tracking the catches, the pollution, and other problems associated with over-fishing and the commercial use of chemicals on our fields, lawns, and in our factories.  There is a requirement to 'register' if you are going to do salt-water fishing, and the registration fee in 2011 is $15.00.  New Jersey did not opt into this, stating that their fishermen need not pay the fee, it is presumed that the taxpayers of New Jersey are picking up the tab for the few fishermen there.

The moral is that you must check the local and state rules and comply, or face being stopped, fined, and maybe arrested.

Note that the license fees collected are supposed to be used for hatcheries, restocking, conservation of the waters, and for the health care of the fishing species, let's hope that the money in all states is used for this, and not to line someone's pockets.
