Cruise Ships - are they ripping you off?

We recently sent a few of our correspondents on a cruise to the Bahamas Islands. The cruise line gave a price for the accommodations and the cruise, including some port of call tours. The brochures showed a beautiful ship, lots of people being entertained, and wined and dined, and even some sitting at the Captain's table.

Ok, here is the reality of the situation, the accommodations were not as pictured, the food not as shown, and the entertainment poor. The drinks were extra at nearly $8 per glass, and one had to pay for just about everything that made a ocean cruise a delight, the total cost turned out to be nearly 30% more than the advertized price.

The next cruise line 'rip off' is where the cruise is a stated and at the price stated, but due to weather or an engine breakdown parts of the trip are missed or cancelled, and the refund is in the form of a future cruise, not cash. How many people can take off the time to go on a cruise, and then months later do it again, not many. Also, if the cruise was a gift or wedding honeymoon, or anniversary event, who wants to redo it months later when the romance has worn off of the initial blush?

Then there are the missed departures due to transportation or weather or whatever, you can usually kiss the cruise goodbye if you made the arrangements through another agency or method. The cruise lines will only fly you to the first port of arrival and then departure, if you booked the transportation through them, and at a rate that may be much higher than the rate offered by others.

The moral is that you must carefully read the contract and you must ask questions and get all important answers in writing and signed and dated by the agent, to not do so may cost you money, time, and what should have been a wonderful vacation cruise.
