Public Rail Transportation - Amtrak
Back in the early part of the last century the primary mode of transportation to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and many of our National Parks and our cities and their tourism spots were the rail roads of the USA. Unfortunately, the oil and automotive industry nearly, and almost completely, destroyed public transport by rail. From the ashes of this rose the Phoenix of Amtrak, a government run passenger rail service that crisscrosses the USA and provides low cost, comfortable, and scenic views of America.
Amtrak offers comfortable wide seating, rooms with beds, a lunch room cafeteria, a fine restaurant, and lots of space to move about on many of its longer routes. There are bartenders, guest speakers, waitresses, waiters, porters, and others that are available to service those from one to one-hundred plus.
Now, here is the problem with Amtrak, it does NOT own its tracks or right of ways, those are owned by privately owned companies, the very companies that could not run the railroads in the first place, and finally gave up their passenger service to the American taxpayer. Thus, Amtrak is at the mercy of the Freight Lines that have priority on almost all the track used by Amtrak. This produces delays, detours, and a passenger rail service that has a difficult time competing with airlines on medium to long-range commutes.
Amtrak today is in the process under the President Obama administration of securing and rebuilding the tracks, stations, engines, and routes to efficient high-speed transport, which is used in Korea, Germany, France, Japan, China, and many other countries world wide, but originally created in America in the 1960's. There unfortunately is opposition to this by some that believe that airlines are going to be here forever.
Now, here is my complaint with Amtrak and its management, it has failed to win the private sector providers of local transport to and from the Amtrak stations, which are normally in the downtown areas of most major cities, or the outskirts of the minor towns and cities. Therefore, it is very difficult in most instances to get from the airport to the rail station or visa versa, and since most rental car agencies are located at the airport, the Amtrak traveler has to find a way to get from the rail station to the airport, twice, coming and going, which can easily add up to $50 in taxi fares on even short trips.
Cities like Portland, Oregon have airport to city light rail at a very affordable price, and a senior citizen visitor to Portland will pay as little as a dollar for the ride, but it takes a minimum of one transfer and a few blocks walk, and then a second few blocks walk to get to or from the airport to the Amtrak station, and if you are dragging bags holding two weeks of clothing and supplies, it is not an easy walk, especially in the cool Portland rain, which is ample during many of their seasons.
