Pennsylvania Rail Road Tours
Pennsylvania has many fine old rail roads that still provide the train buff with a day's outing riding the rails. Note that there is a small entry fee for most of these, check for opening times and days, and for fees, before making the trip. Here are a few of the more popular tracks to follow:
Arden Trolley Museum
(Pennsylvania Railway Museum Association)
25 pieces of equipment dating back to 1894. Visitor rides available. Tours of the car barn and car shop available, and to make the day even better there are a picnic grove, gift shop, and a drink concession.
Located north of Washington, off I-79 at Meadowlands Pittsburg, PA, 15230.
Electric City Railway
VanDepoele Museum of Transportation. First electric streetcar in America, inaugurated in Scranton, PA, in 1886 by Charles VanDepoele. Rare Trolleys, streetcars, snack bar, touring, and gift shop.

Horseshoe Curve
Opened in 1854 this engineering marvel enabled locomotives to surmount the grueling Allegheny Mountains.

The Hilton at Lackawanna Station
This is now a 150-room hotel, but in its day was the Lackawanna Station, a hub for passenger and freight for 65 years. The original building was constructed in 1908.

Lake Shore Railway Historical Society Museum
Housed in the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Station this 1899 building displays rail memorabilia and a collection of rail cars and freight rolling stock. There is a 0-6-0 60-ton Heister fireless steamer on display.

Railroads Memorial Museum
Dedicated to the American Railroader and the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops. Electric, diesel locomotives and passenger and freight cars on display.

Red Caboose Lodge and Age of Steam Museum
You get to eat, drink, and sleep in an old Red Caboose. This motel has 34 genuine cabooses outfitted for overnight stays. The is a museum full of railroad memorabilia, a sunken garden train layout, and a collection of pre-war tin plate trains.

Shade Gap Electric Railway

Join the fun for a two-mile trip on a restored trolley. Travel along the Blacklog Creek and experience the thrill once afforded to your grandparents.

Steamtown, USA.
Formally Steamtown of Vermont, (click to see more pictures) this museum on wheels provides a two-hour, 26 mile excursion through the Pocono Mountains. There are over 100 cars and locomotives for your enjoyment, and the 'Big Boy' a 1.2 million pound locomotive makes its home on the site.

Strasburg Railroad
Visit Amish Country by rail, this coal-burning steam locomotive takes you on a 45-minute ride on the 'Road to Paradise', Paradise, PA that is. The Strasburg Railroad has been traveling these tracks for 150 years, now you can also.

Toy Train Museum
Headquarters of the Toy Train Association, the museum has displays from the mid-1980 on up to today. There are layouts, push-button train displays, and a gift shop.

West Chester Railroad
This 1858 Railroad runs on a 4 foot 8 ½ inch standard gauge track and is privately owned and operated. In 1997 the rail started providing rides for tourist between Market Street in West Chester, Pennsylvania in Chester County and the village of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania in Delaware County.
The 7.3 miles one-way ride is provided by volunteers of the non-profit West Chester Railroad Heritage Association using the 4 States Railway Service, Inc. engines and cars.West Chester, PA.
