USA - Top USA Tourist Spots
The United States of America's top Tourist spots
In our opinion the following are the top tourist spots in the USA for which a visitor from another country should plan to see. These spots have been selected for the beauty of the location, the numerous things to see at the location, and the interest to a foreign visitor that is spending his or her hard-earned money and wants the best value.
# 1 - Flagstaff, Arizona and the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA.
{See our guide book on this location} The Flagstaff, Arizona area offers the Grand Canyon, the Grand Canyon Caves, Meteor Crater, the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, Montezuma's Well, Montezuma's Castle, many Native America Ruins, an Observatory, museums, and parks that include beautiful rivers, mountains, and lava fields. Plan on staying for five to seven days at this location. Rental car or touring bus is required to see most attractions. You will be within range of Lake Meade and Las Vegas, about 100 miles distant.
# 2 - Buffalo, New York and the American and Canadian Falls.
Niagara Falls is the honeymoon location for millions of young and older lovers and is one of two USA and Canada shared tourist locations. There are the falls, an Aquarium, museums, and a dozen other attractions that will keep lovers and families occupied. Plan on spending one to four days in this location. Public transportation can be used for most travel in the area.
# 3 - Rapid City, South Dakota and Mount Rushmore.
This location is somewhat of an American tourist only spot due to the primary attraction being Mount Rushmore, the carving of four past American presidents, but the area also offers much to the foreign traveler. Custer State Park, massive USA park service caverns, Wounded Knee Memorial, gold mines, old west towns, the Black Hills, Badlands National Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mammoth pits, Devil's Tower (Close Encounters volcano), Spearfish Canyon, and dozens of other entertaining locations. {See our guide book on this location} Plan on spending five to seven days at this location. Rental car or touring bus is required to see most attractions.
# 4 - Bay Area, San Francisco, California.
This area is designed for tourist in that it features everything from the ocean to the mountains and caters to tourist of all races and backgrounds. The area extends for fifty to sixty miles north, south, and east. To the north you have Mount Tamalpais, Napa Valley, Sausalito, Muir woods (Redwood giants), and the Golden Gate Bridge. To the east you have Alcatraz Island and the Marshall Gold Discovery location. To the south there are Lick Observatory, San Jose, the Cannery, Mission Santa Clara de AsĂs, Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, Winchester House, Gilroy Garlic Festival, and dozens of other sights. Within San Francisco there are Coit Tower and its paintings, Fisherman's wharf, old forts, coastal drives and exhibits, water parks, museums, Japanese gardens, etc. Plan on spending from five to ten days in the area. Public transport is available for many attractions, but a rental car or touring bus is recommended for seeing most attractions.
# 5 - Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
This location is not the easiest to get to since it is far from most major airports and cities, and although once had train service, no longer does. Your best bet for visiting the park is to do so while in route from Cody, Wyoming to Salt Lake City, Utah. The park sits on a 'super volcano area' that will eventually self-destruct, and due to the nearness of subterranean lava it contains a multitude of boiling mud holes, steam geysers (Old Faithful the most famous), and colorful pools of mineral waters. The park also contains the Yellowstone river and waterfalls, Yellowstone Lake, and some of the more beautiful mountain landscape in America. Bison and elk and bear may be seen during the few spring to fall months, skiers and wolves during the winter months. Plan on one to two days in the Park, and one to two days getting to and from the park. Rental car or touring bus is required to see most attractions.
# 6 - The Great Circle, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada.
The Great Circle starts in Las Vegas, Nevada and goes north to Zion National Park, then to Bryce Canyon N.P., west to Arches N.P., south to Canyonlands N.P., east to Mesa Verde, south to Canyon de Chelly, east to Window Rock, west to the Painted Desert and the Grand Canyon, west to Hover Dam and back to Las Vegas. This trip will require a minimum of ten to about fifteen days, there are much more to see than listed here. Rental car or touring bus is required to see most attractions. {See our guide book on this location}
# 7 - Los Angles area, California
L.A. is one of the largest cities in the United States of America and is the home of Hollywood, the Queen Elizabeth, Knox Berry Farm, the original Disneyland, Universal Studios, and hundreds of other natural and man-made attractions. Plan on spending five to twenty days in the area. There are various public transportation systems available, but a rental car or touring bus is recommended for seeing most attractions.
# 8 - Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Here is a mixed bag of USA history, made for tourism attractions, natural attractions, lighthouses, canals, beaches, whales, etc., that are singles, and family friendly. The vast number of attractions will keep you moving and interested for days, from morning to night. Late Spring, Summer, or early Fall are the time to visit as you will be doing a lot of walking. The only drawback is the lack of parking on the warm water Long Island Sound beaches, but the is plenty of parking elsewhere. The area is the home of Woods Hole and you can visit their waterfront facilities. There are whale watching cruises at Providencetown, in Providencetown you will be intrigued by the assortment of items, wall paintings, and mix of peoples. Nantucket Island and Martha's Vineyard are reachable by air or ferry, and are popular tourist spots. If you head north to Boston you can also visit Salem the home of the witches, the Mayflower II, Plymouth Rock, Bunker hill, and the Plymouth Plantation. Plan on spending five to six days for Cape Cod and another one to three days for the Boston area. to twelve days in the area. Rental car or touring bus is required to see most attractions.
# 9 - New York City and the Hudson Valley area.
NYC is a place that caters to the world's business community, and to millions of visitors each year. The city is at the mouth of the Hudson River and there is a road, Route # 9 that goes north from the city toward the state capital of Albany. This area contains Sleepy Hollow, the homes of Vanderbilt, the Roosevelt's, and Washington Irving. The city is a short ferry ride to Staten Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, and Ellis Island four locations that helped form the nation and which invited millions of foreign immigrants and refugees into the USA. The city has famous locations like Times Square, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, the Empire State building and the Chrysler building, it also contains the remains of the World Trade Center. There are theatres, museums, river cruises, and a host of other tourist attractions suitable for most. Plan on spending two to four days within the city, and an additional two to four days visiting the islands, and two to four days visiting the Hudson Valley. Within the city public transportation is by bus, taxi, and light rail, outside the city and up the Hudson Valley there is a rail system, but a rental car or touring bus is recommended for seeing most attractions.
# 10 - Las Vegas, Nevada.
As a tourist attraction this oasis in the Nevada desert is a must see. The lights, sounds, and history of the city is exceeded by few other places on earth. If you like good food, excellent entertainment, and low to high stakes gambling, then this is your place. But, to a family one has to consider that the nights fade to day, and thus one has to find things to do, fortunately there is plenty. Red Rock Park is just north of the city, there is an old western village to the south, the Moapa Indian Reservation and the Valley of Fire with its Petroglyphs are within 50 miles of the city. There are casinos with 'children' rides and play areas, there are museums, and there is a short ride to what is probably the most famous dam in the world, the Hover (Boulder) dam and Lake Mead. Just south of Lake Mead there is a fish hatchery, and on the lake there are houseboats and fishing. Plan on spending from three to six days in the area. There is some public transportation within the city, but a rental car or touring bus is recommended for seeing most attractions.
