USA - Facilities Info
Tourist from non-USA states or territories should read the following information, before attempting to come to the USA on holiday or extended vacation.
Chamber of Commerce
When traveling to the USA you should have a reasonable idea of the area to which you will be traveling. Example; Coming to see Philadelphia Pennsylvania. If you contact the Pennsylvania or the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce you will receive a booklet which shows you some of the more important Philadelphia sights (sites) and a goodly amount of advertizing of motels, hotels, restaurants, tours, etc. These are 'paid' advertisements, and many will be from the 'top shelf' establishments that by charging top dollar prices can afford to advertize in the Chamber of Commerce brochures. Therefore, contacting the Chamber of Commerce in the area of interest is a good starting point, but should not be your last resort. Remember that the Chamber of Commerce is setup and run by local business people, not tourist.
Better Business Bureau (BBB)
If you are planning to stay at a particular hotel or motel, or eat at a special restaurant, or take a tour with 'xyz' tour company, you should check each with the BBB to ascertain if there are legal problems or an abundance of complaints against the establishment. Be aware that the BBB is a business, the helps business, and the information you receive, the ratings of the establishment, may NOT always be accurate.
State/City Tourist Bureaus
These are individual State or City organizations that provide information on the local sights (sites) to see, and the local businesses that advertize with the organization. Most places recommended by these tourist bureaus are 'A' ok, and will provide decent service or value for you money. But, like the other organizations that are set up to 'help' tourist, money talks and if you only look at going to the advertized places, you may be cheating yourself out of money, adventure, and excitement. Many very interesting local events, sights (sites), and places to see are NOT advertized, and therefore you need to find alternate places of information, such as our 'tourist guide books' that are written by those that have been there, done that.
Road services, gasoline, bathrooms, food courts, motels, hotels.
One of the neat things about the USA is that if you build it, they will come. We in the USA established a National Park System nearly 100 years ago, and a National Highway System about 60 years ago. The USA has some of the most extensive road, air, boat, and rail systems in the world, and therefore access to museums, parks, natural resources, natural wonders, are bountiful, and along these routes we have had entrepreneurs by the tens of thousands that have built motels, hotels, museums, bathrooms, food courts, gasoline stations, restaurants, etc. Unless you are in the far mid-western areas of the country there are 'facilities' every twenty or so miles or less on most roads. In the far mid-western states, such as New Mexico or Arizona or Utah, you can travel up to a hundred miles or more WITHOUT seeing any facilities, therefore, if you are not sure, ask the locals about the terrain and the facilities upon. Our series of guide books can help.
