Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Foodstuffs
 

Import and export rules
The USA works with Mexico and with Canada in limiting the import and export of most Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Foodstuffs. There are also age limitations, usually one must be age 21 or older to carry or transport these items over the border. There are different rules (laws) for going into Mexico or Canada than from coming from Mexico or Canada, and if you are traveling across the borders, you should first familiarize yourself with these rules; a search of the Internet should get you the information you need. Be sure that you are searching *.gov websites, as these are usually up to date and the most accurate.
 

State by State rules
As for the purchase of Alcohol, Firearms, and Tobacco within the United States of America, each STATE has its rules and regulations. For example: Some states may still have 'Blue Laws' that prohibit the sale of alcohol on Sundays, other states may prohibit any sales of Alcohol, and still others may restrict the selling to certain types of stores or shop. Pennsylvania at the time of this writing (Jan 2011) has separate stores for selling beer by the case, special permits to sell beer by the 6-pack in grocery stores, and the selling of wine and liquor products are by State Owned stores. 
 

Restaurant sale of Alcohol
You may also find that some areas have restaurants that sell beer and wine, others that sell beer, wine, and liquors, and others that sell neither. You will find establishment that 'give' you wine or beer free with your meal or theatre ticket or whatever, and still others that will allow you to BYOB, Bring Your Own Bottle, to the establishment.
 

Smoking
When in comes to tobacco, you will find that many areas of the country allow smoking in public places, others will not, and some will not even let you smoke in your car, if you have children in the car. You do have to be 18 or 21 years of age in most areas to be able to purchase and you may be required to show valid ID.
 

Firearms
Firearms are another mixed bag; some states allow their citizens to carry handguns, others restrict the use and require safety devices like trigger guards on all weapons. Some states allow near 'instant' purchases of guns, others require a BI, Background Investigation and a waiting period, usually 30 days.
 

Food Items
Food Stuffs are usually allowed from state to state, or border to border, but if you are coming from Mexico, Arizona, Nevada or Oregon into California you will usually be stopped and checked for live plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables, etc., as these can carry into California 'Fruit Flies' and other pest that can destroy crops, a primary industry of California. You will have to eat or otherwise destroy or trash items that are banned.
